Cebu, Philippines: Then and Now

Blogging for over a year now I think readers should also be informed about the city itself other than the travel tips, the news, events, and food. I suppose they should also be informed about the history and business in these two great cities. So now I will give you first about Cebu City.

Cebu is the ever-first city in the Philippines during the Spanish colony. Discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, Cebu was once called Zubu or Sugbu, an island occupied by Muslim and Animalist tribes ruled by the Datus and Rajas. When Magellan was killed by Lapu-Lapu, King of Mactan Island, Cebu still became a land of interest to Spanish explorers.

The explorers went back to the island in order to gain colony but failed in a series of battles. It was only in 1565 when the Spanish explorers established colony under the name Villa del Santíssimo Nombre de Jesus or also known as the Town Holy Name of Jesus. The University of San Carlos was then built as the first university in Cebu.
