Will Sugar Shane Mosley Beat Manny Pacquiao?

Everybody knows what world boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao can do inside the ring. Evident from his ten world titles in eight weight divisions, and his unbelievable performance in every fight, it’s easy to predict the outcome when he fights Sugar Shane Mosley on May 7.

Speed, power, stamina, footwork, and just about anything that can kick a boxer’s ass, Manny Pacquiao has. Boxing critics, boxing aficionados, or even an ordinary observer knows what Manny Pacquiao is capable of.

On the other hand, I think not everybody knows what Sugar Shane Mosley can do. But for sure, the boxing critics (excluding me, hehe) probably already know what will happen in the fight. But in the back of their minds they can’t conclude anything yet until the fight on May 7 will be over.

Boxing experts know Sugar Shane Mosley won three world titles in three weight divisions, including the WBA super welterweight title. He beat Oscar De La Hoya twice in 2000 and 2003. Mosley also has the speed and the power that can make an opponent drunk. This was apparent on his previous fights and the fight against Floyd Mayweather, wherein Floyd almost went down after a strong hook punch.

Comparing these two fighters’ body measurement, Mosley has the advantage in height, reach, chest, biceps, and fists. Manny Pacquiao however is dominant in forearms, wrist, and calf. Still Mosley has the bigger advantage. He has the factors that are significant in a boxing fight.

But Manny Pacquiao has beaten all the boxing champions who are taller, higher reach, and heavier than him like Oscar De La Hoya, Joshua Clottey, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, among others; all of these champions had been beaten by a man so small but with a thousand punches.
To me the only chance for Mosley to beat Pacquiao is to match Manny Pacquiao’s speed and power. Mosley should have the same speed and power as Pacquiao has to beat him. Another chance for Mosley to beat Pacquiao is to let Pacquiao take a sleeping pill to make him feel like a handicap.

Pacquiao is just unstoppable. He doesn’t run out of gas even in the twelfth round, throwing punches as fast and strong as in the first few rounds. His footwork is very amazing, boxing his opponent in many different angles. Not to mention his unthinkable speed and power, his body movement, his rhythm, and his relentless nature are so overwhelming to every opponent.

No boxer in history has ever done what Manny Pacquiao did. Not even iron Mike Tyson who lost to Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis, and Muhammad Ali to Joe Frazier.

No boxer has emerged yet to beat Manny Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather even knows for himself that he will lose if he fights Pacquiao. Only a boxer that matches Manny’s power and speed can probably beat him. Or probably only an inevitable thing that can knock Manny Pacquiao down on the ring, and that is his age. I believe the critics will agree to that.

Freddy has picked Pac’s opponents well. Cotto has never recovered from being destroyed by Margerito. De Le Hoya was older and dehydrated and previously KO’d more than once. Margerito was completely destroyed by Mosley before Pac got to him. Hatton was KOed by Mayweather and never recovered, then Pac fought him. Now Freddy finally gives Mosley a shot at Pac when Mosley is well past his prime and will be nearly 40 by the time he fights Pac. Clottey had Cotto but let him off the hook, though I never thought much of Clottey at least he wasn’t old and previously KOed when he fought Pac. It’s no coincidence that Pac couldn’t knock him out even though Clottey is a second tier fighter who took the fight on short notice and without his regular trainer.

All of this is not to say that Pac isn’t a great fighter or that he is not the pound for pound best. What I’m saying is that I still don’t know exactly how good he is when he fights over-the-hill greats. It’s not his fault that he hasn’t been really tested as he’s moved up in weight. There just aren’t a lot of young rivals for him yet. Maybe in a year.

As for Pac’s speed I would have to say that he has looked fast against the slow fighters he’s been matched against. Punch for punch he is not a top five fighter but he throws fast combinations. He throws combinations faster than any other fighter out there now for sure. He has excellent speed and a heart as big as a mountain. Most importantly he seems like a really decent man. Mosley may have one more good fight left in him. If the Mosley who destroyed Margerito shows up agains Pac then Pacman will go down and out. If the Mosley who fought Mayweather and Mora shows up then Mosley will go down and out. Simple as that I think. My bet would be that Mosley goes out in the later rounds when age and Pacquiao catch up with him.

My bet of course is Pacman, but, who knows?! Things could change all of a sudden… =)
