Finally, I got out of my solitary room. hehe. I went to three locations, all in one day: Cebu La Fortuna Bakery, Chinese Ngohiong, and San Carlos University. Let’s talk about Cebu La Fortuna Bakery first. I was really intrigued by this since I’ve read a post from marketmanila.com. So I hopped into it for the first time.

I wanted to interview someone there but the workers seemed to be very busy doing their business. So I just observed as much as I can and see what I can find out.

When I entered it wasn’t I had expected because I thought the place was supposed to be a bakery or a bake shop. But inside looked like a department store. Bread and pastries were at the food counter on one corner. On the other side was another food counter where typical Filipino dishes are sold. Across were packed commercial delights just near the cashier.

According to the some resources on the Net, Cebu La Fortuna Bakery was established in 1953 (Imagine, 1953, 58 years ago). It has 7 branches all across Cebu, and one in California, USA. It was then I realized from these resources, particularly the La Fortuna’s official website, that the place I have gone was opened just in 1998. Now I wonder where the original La Fortuna Bakery was located in 1953.

Anyway, I was interested with the Strawberry Petite and the Fresh Lumpia. Not bad. The Strawberry Petite was delightful. I was curious about what could have been the ingredients in making such a delicious strawberry cake. The Fresh Lumpia was just okay. It was the usual fresh lumpia you eat in Filipino or Chinese restaurants.

The place was neat although not so organized. At first I really thought I was inside a bookstore. Maybe because of the interior architecture of the building. But the products were really fascinating. They offer many different kinds of pastries, cakes, breads and pies, including Chinese delicacies.

Well, it doesn’t matter whether you’re inside a convenience store or a bookstore; the important thing is the food. They were great. La Fortuna Bakery couldn’t have survived for decades if it hadn’t been for their products. A “Sariling Atin” that we should be proud of; can even compete with Goldilocks and Red Ribbon.
La Fortuna Bakery has three main brances in Cebu. In Borromeo Street, Magallanes Street, near Sto Nino Church (where I’ve gone), and Capitol corner Escario Street.
