Sunday Night at Starbucks

Starbucks in the Philippines has become a favorite hangout by call center agents, students, businessmen, lovers, families, and even ordinary government and private employees.

When I came upon one at Ayala Center Cebu, I had no idea what to expect. I even didn’t know what to order. I’m not getting used to hanging out in coffee bars, never had occasions to drop by and have a cup of coffee, even it serves no ordinary coffee. I had quit drinking coffee for some time.

The good thing was that they serve coffee with no caffeine, or I should say, other beverages or shakes that didn’t contain caffeine like Chocolate Cream Chip and Iced Green Tea for my date.

Not bad. I mean the shakes were good. But there was something about the ambiance that didn’t meet my standards. To me it was too noisy. A place I would not recommend to those who want to have quiet conversations; important confidential business deals cannot be discussed here. Well, at least on the area where we settled on second floor. My date however said that there was an area below where it wasn’t crowded and noisy. Probably an area ideal for private lovers and secret business deals.

I would have wanted to stay at that area, where I can listen to good music and only little voices, as what Starbucks should have been when Apple partnered with it, letting customers browse their favorite music in iTunes through Wi-Fi Internet without a need for login details. Perfect for my date’s iPhone 4.

The problem was, Starbucks in Ayala Center stopped the access of customers for Wi-Fi Internet service. My date told me it was some sort of an experiment. So that Starbucks management can be able to figure out whether customers really like the quality of the coffee, shakes, beverages, or only the free WiFi service. They observed that customers who have their notebooks with them ordered only the cheapest beverages.

It would have been better if Wi-Fi service was available, regardless of the quality of the coffee. After all, it’s the name of the most popular and biggest coffeehouse chain in the world what matters most.
